Soiled Doves by Anne Seagraves
Please, if anyone else gets a hold of another of her books, I want them all!! The book is on a topic that is often either preached as "sin" or flaunted in a raunchy way. Seagraves does neither. While very matter of fact and to the point, she manages to add just enough real life and love to the stories to prevent them from being a history lesson. The women in this book (all prostitutes or Madams in the early west) are made to feel like "real people". The pictures of many of the people help bring it to home. From the highest class to the lowest, she tells the story including the usual "who, what, when, where" but also including the so important "why" that a lot of non-fiction leave out. Her books are short enough to read in an afternoon and leave you wanting to look farther into the subject. Anyone interested in women's history in the old west should look into reading this author!
