Step On A Crack by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge

Christmas is coming, the former first lady has just been murdered and now hi-jackers have taken the A-List celebrities at her funeral hostage. With 10 adopted children and a wife dying of cancer the last thing NYPD Homicide detective Mike Bennett needs is to be made lead negotiator in charge of this tense situation, adding to his already unbearable stress level.

The story alternates between bittersweet and tender scenes between Bennett and his family and his dying wife and the gritty tension of dealing with the ruthless hostage-takers demands and trying to negotiate a peaceful conclusion. The story moves at breakneck speed, twisting and turning to a shattering finish that comes as a complete surprise.

This book is impossible to put down. I found myself still reading long after I should have turned out the light and gone to sleep.
