"The Ice Queen" by Alice Hoffman

"The Ice Queen" begins when she is eight years old and she makes a terrible wish that comes true. Later she makes another wish, one that will end someone's suffering. It comes true as well. She tries to turn away from everyone, she doesn't talk much anymore, she tries not to feel. She moves from New Jersey to Florida because her brother wants her to. She gets struck by lightning and no longer sees the color red. Everything now looks grey or white, like ice. She meets a man who also has been struck by lightning only he is flame. Everything he touches burns. Slowly, the woman begins her recovery, both from lightning and her inner pain.
I liked the book. It is short, I read it in one sitting. Alice Hoffman is a master at making the reader feel the emotion, or in this case, lack of emotion in the beginning. One could track the main character's progress, finding the things along the way that made a difference in the woman's life. The things that helped her to feel again.

Kathy, Thanks for the review. I'd like to read this book. (But you have the title listed as The Ice Princess, when I think it's The Ice Queen.)
